The real issue of everything is not which church believes or is "better" than another. The whole issue really boils down to the acceptance of the Bible--the whole Bible, every verse, every teaching--as true. When we provide paranthetical input toward the Bible or avoid scriptures in the Bible that may be "conflicting", we step into very dangerous territory. I know of "Christian" churches that do preach on salvation and sin, but avoid 2/3 of the new testament because the pastor's background is limited and he "mentally" doesn't understand all aspects of the Holy Spirit. So to avoid creating strife or generate questions, "ignorance is bliss" and he dances around the new testament with only a handful of scriptures.

In short, I think we lay people have become too dependent on the pastor (although we do need a pastor and teachers) to lead us rather than picking up one of the many Bibles we have and read it for ourselves. Doesn't the Bible declare for us to work out our own salvation with fear and trembling?

I appreciate your bulleted list of mormon beliefs.

Totally agree. I have read all of the Harry Potter books and think they are awesome! I saw the parallel to the resurrection story the entire time also. I believe in doing our research to know what it is we're talking about. As you also said, C.S. Lewis's references were very factual. I admit, I read HP at first because I wanted to see what the hype was all about and I'm a bit rebellious like that...but I finished the series because it was THAT good. I do teach high school Literature though and felt like I should know what it is my students are reading...
