Campus Crusade for Christ (CCC), which has been an amazing evangelistic ministry for more than 60 years has decided that they needed a name change. Why? Apparently the word, “Crusade” is too offensive these days and… oh yeah, the name ”Christ” is a major turn off. Who knew!
“We want to remove any obstacle to people hearing about the most important person who ever lived – Jesus Christ.” said, Vonette Bright, co-founder of CCC. The new name shall be “Cru”. The CCC website goes on to explain,
“We were not trying to eliminate the word Christ from our name. We were looking for a name that would most effectively serve our mission and help us take the gospel to the world. Our mission has not changed. Cru enables us to have discussions about Christ with people who might initially be turned off by a more overtly Christian name…”
So, what does this new name mean? It means that one of the greatest Christian bulwarks in America has taken a step back into the grayish shadows of political correctness. Does this mean that Campus Crusade for Christ (His daddy call’em CCC, I’ma call’em CCC), should lose our support or that they have watered down the same old Gospel message that they’ve preached for more than six decades? Absolutely not!
CCC still has more than 24,000 full-time staff members and 500,000 trained volunteers sharing the Gospel in more than 190 nations of the world. You can be sure that CCC is a wonderful organization, worthy of your support, and that they havent diluted the message of God’s saving Grace… YET, but we’ll be sure to keep an eye on them.
